Sustainable Energy Development at local levels: three of Morocco's Municipalities take up the challenge.

A Territorial Energy Policy Assessment for Morocco

In 2010-2011, on behalf of Morocco's National Agency for the Development of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Development (ADEREE) and with the support of GIZ, IDE-E conducted a Territorial Energy Policy Assessment, shedding light on "Opportunities for Local Authorities to support Sustainable Energy Development in Morocco." The study provided the basis for ADEREE to launch a Territorial Strategy on Sustainable Energy Development (Jiha Tinou 2020), focused on energy planning at municipal levels.

A Territorial Strategy for Sustainable Energy Development at municipal levels

The ADEREE's Territorial Strategy Jiha Tinou 2020, launched in March 2012, is aimed to strengthen the capacity of local governments to assess, plan, implement and evaluate sustainable energy action plans at sub-national levels. Counting with the joint support of the†German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management (ADEME) and the Swiss Renewable Energy Platform for International Cooperation (REPIC), the ADEREE has mandated IDE-E to design, set up and coordinate the strategy's Pilot Cycle (2012-2014).

Three of Morocco's Municipalities take up the challenge

Selected by a Call for Tenders, three of Morocco's Municipalities - Agadir, Oujda and Chefchaouen have successfully engaged in sustainable energy planning, based on the MENA Energy Award methodology, and in close collaboration with local, national and international partners. IDE-E's Offices in Rabat have been acting as an implementing partner and strategic advisor to the Moroccan ADEREE and Municipal Energy Teams to facilitate planning and implementation of local action plans.
